What happens between the jet bridge and the car

Every arriving international passenger and every bag, apart from flights out of pre-clearance airports, has to be screened by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. That screening is the reason an international arrival is unpredictable in a way a domestic one is not, and it is why a fixed pickup time is the wrong thing to book.

If Washington is the end of your journey, you leave the CBP facility and come out onto the Terminal Arrivals Level at Baggage Claim. If you are connecting onward, you re-check your luggage and pass through TSA screening again before heading to your next gate.

We watch the flight rather than the clock. The chauffeur holds in the Cell Phone Lot and moves to the terminal once you are through, so the car reaches the curb at roughly the moment you do.

Landing time is a guess. The car is dispatched against your actual arrival, not your ticket.

The rule that catches people out: collect every piece of luggage before you leave the CBP facility. Once you exit, you are not allowed back in.

Five assumptions that cost people twenty minutes

Dulles handles arrivals differently from most US airports because the international meeting point and the general one are not the same place. A group waiting by the wrong carousel and a driver circling the Arrivals roadway is the single most common way an IAD pickup goes wrong.

What to be sitting in after eight hours in the air

Long-haul arrivals bring more luggage than any other kind of trip, so bag capacity matters more than seat count. The figures below come from our own fleet page and assume full-size checked bags.

Dulles international arrival questions

Which baggage claim is the international meeting area at Dulles?

The airport provides a waiting area immediately outside the International Arrivals Building in the Terminal, near Baggage Claim 15, beside the Starbucks and the International Arrivals signage.

Can my driver wait at the Dulles arrivals curb?

No. The Arrivals Level is for active loading and unloading only and waiting is not permitted, so drivers hold in the Cell Phone Lot until you confirm you are at your door.

Does Mobile Passport Control change where I meet the car?

No, but it can change when. Eligible travelers submit to CBP from the app after landing and follow the Mobile Passport Control signs. The receipt is valid for four hours.

What if I cleared US customs before boarding?

Passengers from pre-clearance airports arrive through the doors between Baggage Claims 4 and 12, the same exit as domestic flights, so tell us your origin when you book.

Where to go next

Arrival information by city, and the carousel number serving each flight, is shown on the Flight Information Display screens on the Baggage Claim Level. The nearest short-term parking is across the road from the terminal entrance if someone is coming inside to meet you.
